David Atkins was born in Greenwich, London in 1964. During the 1980’s, he studied at St. Martins, London, and the Winchester School of Art, where he received a 1st class degree in Painting.

Over the last 30 years, he has exhibited throughout the UK & Europe in solo & group exhibitions. During David’s career, he has won a number of prestigious awards that include, The Bideford Open, Chichester Open, The Laing Landscape award, Horan Prize for Painting, and most recently, the Baltic Exchange Prize for painting. His work is found in a number of high profile public & private collections worldwide.

He says of his work, “There are places, times, moments in a day that can be extraordinary and it is these that I seek to express through the process of drawing and painting. I strive to create something of both the subject and my experience. By spontaneously drawing or painting in a city or landscape I feel as though I am part of a drama, desperately attempting to say something about that moment and my involvement in it.”

David was a lecturer in Fine Art at South Thames College in the late 90’s and then moved to the West Country. From 2001-2010 he lectured at the Fine Art Institute in Bournemouth.

He is now based in Dorset but travels extensively to paint in the UK, Ireland, mainland Europe and America and has clients internationally.

For Thackeray Gallery he has created exhibitions that capture the stunning landscape of Britain and abroad. We are delighted to exhibit and share his scenic works of art.

David Atkins has been represented by Thackeray Gallery since 2020.
