Three years ago, my father, Charters Brown held his first ever exhibition here at the gallery. It was an amazing experience, working with my Dad, building a show together and showcasing his hidden talents for all to enjoy. We thought it was going to be a one-off, but, as you can see, I have gently persuaded him to please return once more to our walls to mark this very special year – his 80th Birthday.
Over the last few years, since his first show, seeing my parents for a lunch or a dinner has become very different experience. Never a visit goes by without a detour to Dad’s studio just a few minutes away from their home in Barnes. This studio captures my father’s spirit completely. Full to the brim with every surface covered, books, paper, canvases, paints, brushes, pencils, you name it, the studio is a haven for his artistic energies. The radio plays. Under one of the counters sits the all important dog bed, who offer great inspiration of course and then there is the fridge with wine for visitors, who offer thoughtful comments and feedback. Centre stage though is a large, impressive easel, always with a work in progress on it.
On my last visit, there was an incredible painting, half finished on it, of a cobalt blue jacket hanging over the back of a chair. It is my father’s favourite jacket and his chair – a novel take on a self portrait is what came to my mind. Striking, suggestive, quiet and yet bold, abstract in idea and glorious in finish. This painting sums up for me how far along the road my father has come since he first started this new chapter over a whole decade ago. Not afraid to be a little unconventional, always clear and confident in his style, up for a challenge and an adventure. These new works celebrate all that and more.
For Charters Brown’s latest exhibition, 100% of profits from all sales will be split between two charities, my chosen charity is Many Tears Animal Rescue and my father’s is The Island Trust.
