Born in 1965, Anne-Marie Butlin is a still life painter based in London. She studied at Harrow College of Art, Loughborough College of Art & Middlesex University. Anne-Marie’s flower paintings have been exhibited both in the UK and worldwide. These include: The Royal Society of Portrait Painters, The Royal Academy, The Royal Watercolour Society, The Royal Society of British Artists and The Royal College of Art.
Anne-Marie Butlin’s still life paintings emphasise natural plenitude and the importance of ecological stewardship, both in rural and urban environments:
“My flower paintings attempt to capture the quiet transitory moments which make any planted space such an oasis of calm. Sometimes I want to convey the abundance of nature by creating a tapestry of marks and colour; and at other times I want the image to be simpler, emphasizing the unique shapes and elegant structures of a plant by blocking out the background.
With our current climate concerns, garden design is increasingly naturalistic in its use of plants, and I try to reflect this in my paintings, drawing inspiration from my own small space but also visits to gardens like Chelsea Physic Garden, Oxford Botanic Garden, Great Dixter and Sissinghurst. More recently I’ve been really drawn to wildflowers both in urban spaces and the countryside.”
The Thackeray Gallery has represented Anne-Marie Butlin since 2019.
